Rules and Regulations


LIVE COMPETITIONS

 UV/LED GEL & ACRYLIC / Sculpture & Tip & Overlay

SCULPTURE: GEL OR ACRYLIC / 90 min / RIGHT HAND
TIP & OVERLAY: GEL OR ACRYLIC / 90 min / LEFT HAND

  1. Competitors are required to sculpt on the model’s RIGHT hand with L&P acrylic and tip/overlay in hard/sculpting gel on the model’s LEFT hand. This means there is an opportunity to enter 2 competitions in one sitting.
  2. NEW - Competitors can take just one comp on one hand. One-hand competitors will be given 90-minutes in acrylic and 90-minutes in gel to complete the hand and be positioned in one area together. Those doing both hands will be asked to stop after 90-minutes in acrylic and 90-minutes in gel and have a 15-minute break before starting on the second hand.
  3. Competitors must polish 2 fingers on each hand (thumb and pinkie) of the model with a red cream polish/lacquer only – no base coat, ridge filler or topcoat may be used. The polish may be of the competitors’ choice.
  4. NEW - On the underside of the nail – the judges do need to see white under the 2 red nails, means all 5 nails need to be created in a French style pink & white.
  5. The nail bed CAN be extended on all 5 nails.
  6. NEW - The form and shape can be only square or squoval.
  7. The nailbed from the proximal fold to the deepest point of your smile line should be as long as the end point of your smile line to the end point of the nail/hairline (sideview).
  8. Hairline should be not thicker than a business card.
  9. C-Curve should be 50%.
  10. NO premixing of camouflage cover pink or whites before the event. All overlay products and material must be in original packaging – with clear correct label.
  11. These are French style pink & white competitions with 2 red polished nails. Cover pink products are allowed.
  12. Cream, lotion, oil, and polish dry products may be used. Excess lotion and oil will afford point deductions. If a competitor is seen cleaning hands and nails after the competition is closed with any product, such as canned air, it is immediate disqualification. Models may not put fingers in their mouth or rub them on their clothing.
  13. No gel polish products/sealers to be used on the L&P acrylic categories. L&P acrylic nails needs to be buffed to a high shine.
  14. Water and soap may be used in finishing.
  15. Tips must NOT be pre-tailored or touched before the comp starts. Competitors may not touch the nail tips prior to the start of the competition.
  16. Every competitor must arrive with an organized tip box with at least 10 tips of each size in each allocated size compartment of the box. A disorganized tip box will be removed from the desk by a floor judge.
  17. For sculpture a roll of ONLY & EXACT 25 forms per comp. Floor judges will be closely inspecting every form.
  18. Adhesive is allowed for tip & overlay. NO adhesive for the sculpt categories and must not be on the nail desk.
  19. E-Files are allowed.
  20. Gel competitors must bring a UV or LED gel lamp.
  21. You are only permitted to use Natural or Clear tips in both UV gel and acrylic tip & overlay categories.
  22. NOTE - It is not necessary to create lunula/moons on the nail – there are no extra points for lunulas.
  23. No hybrid gel and no gel polish products allowed in the traditional P&W comps. 
  24. Only hard/sculpting gels allowed in the traditional gel comps. 
  25. NEW - Only in the gel comps a soak off top gel is allowed for the finish, not in L&P comps. 
  26. TIP – Read the score sheets. Check out the point distribution. Where you will gain the most points and where you gain the least. This will help your timing and focus. Knowledge of where you can gain points and where you can unnecessarily lose them is helpful.
  27. NEW – For those doing both competitions – the hands will be compared for the Perfect Match competition and judged on three areas – apex, finish, c-curve - for a maximum of 30 points.
  28. NOTE - No tools to aid the creation of smile lines are to be used. Smile lines are to be created using a brush and/or hand file. (NO smile line cutters allowed.)

 GEL POLISH MANICURE

BOTH HANDS / 60 min
RED ON RIGHT HAND

FRENCH ON LEFT HAND

  1. NEW - This competition is done on natural nails only - duration 60-minutes.
  2. The model is to come with manicured nails. NO manicure procedure is necessary during this comp.
  3. Nails ready for gel polish must be enhanced and coated with any type of Gel polish product.
  4. Right hand is to be created in a solid red color.
  5. Left hand is to be finished in a traditional French manicure style. Use white on the free edge for French and transparent pink, clear or cover on the nail plate.
  6. No glitter, shimmer or frost permitted.
  7. All colors must be free of pearl and opalescence/metallic effect.
  8. No design element is required. Just a picture-perfect flawless set of nails.
  9. Any Gel polish is allowed.
  10. Hard Gel/Sculpting Gel, Acrylic or Hybrid is not allowed.
  11. The form and shape can be oval, square or squoval.
  12. No extension of the nail plate/natural nail is allowed. The nailplate/natural nail must be free of product and natural.
  13. Gel polish must be correctly labelled and can be in a pot (color gel) or a bottle. It’s not the pot or brush that counts here – it’s the finish on the nails.
  14. NOTE - The finish of the nails should be like a nail lacquer look.

 SALON NAILS

BOTH HANDS / 60 min

  1. Show your skills as a salon nail professional: everyday nails for everyday clients.
  2. Choose between one of these artificial systems (L&P Acrylic, Sculpting Gel, fiberglass, hybrids) then shape, style and lengthen nails accordingly.
  3. NEW - 60-minutes to complete a set of salon-style nail enhancements on both hands - using any suitable artificial nail system.
  4. No gel polish or dip systems to be used.
  5. NEW - The length should not be longer than 50% of the nailbed. 
  6. The nails need to be extended over a form or tips.
  7. NEW - The form and shape can be almond, oval, square or squoval.
  8. Hairline should be not thicker than a credit card.
  9. Sculpt or tip & overlay techniques to be used only. NO molds or molds labelled as nail forms – just nail tips & paper sculpting forms allowed.
  10. No white tips. Use clear or natural tips only.
  11. Competitors are required to use professional products. 
  12. No glitter, colored powder, additives etc. to be used – judges are looking for the most natural set of nails that suit the hand shape and skin tone. (NB: This rule does not apply to the ring finger.)
  13. Camouflage powders or gels can be used if appropriate for the ‘client’.
  14. No embellishment or encapsulation – judges want to see natural looking enhancements in any shape. The competitor is to choose the most relevant shape to suit the fingers and nail condition. (NB: This rule does not apply to the RING finger.)
  15. NEW - RING FINGER is to be embellished to create a feature nail. This nail must complement the overall look, not detract, but enhance the complete look and can be embellished in any way you choose. 
  16. Foils, glitters, rhinestones, powders, hand painting are allowed. 
  17. No decals, pre-designed or printed appliqués to be used. 
  18. No Stamping of art allowed.
  19. No tip sizing, touching, or pre-blending allowed before the comp begins.
  20. NOTE - No tools to aid the creation of smile lines are to be used. Smile lines are to be created using a brush only. (NO smile line cutters allowed.)
  21. Cleansing and moisturizing products (oils, creams, lotions, etc.) are allowed. Excessive use of oil is not permitted. Judges will deduct points for excess oil.
  22. The nail enhancements must be finished in a natural or French style pink & white – gel topcoats and sealants are allowed. No nail polish color.
  23. NOTE - Extra points are awarded for smile lines or a beautifully blended pink & white - baby boomer / ombré.

 THE JOY OF NAILS

3 NAILS (no pinkie or thumb) / 90 min

  1. One hand only – competitor can work on his/her own hand.
  2. Liquid & powder, Sculpting Gel, tip & overlay, sculpting on natural nails are all acceptable – anything is allowed!
  3. Looking for desirable & gorgeous shapes, design, beauty, style & skill.
  4. Inviting professionals to show their most favored and best nail designs, shapes, and styles.
  5. Anything can be applied to the nails. 
  6. No restrictions on shape and length.
  7. These nails can be commercial salon nails; they can be extreme; they can be fantasy; they must be original and inspirational.
  8. NEW - Each nail must be different in length, shape, and design. (Points will be deducted if 3 different nails are not shown.)
  9. They will be judged on the skill of a true nail professional. The judges will be looking for the ‘wow’ factor. The more skills and creativity used, the better. It’s a showcase for what YOU can bring to the nail industry to innovate and inspire.
  10. NEW - NO more than 20% crystal embellishment on each nail.
  11. All nail work is to be done on the comp floor - no pre-made work allowed. NO pre-tailoring or touching of tips or forms etc.
  12. Please design 3 nails (no pinkie or thumb included).
  13. NOTE – This competition is designed to showcase a range of your creative and technical skills. This is an aspirational competition where you show other nail professionals what you are capable of.

 STILETTO NAILS

LEFT HAND / 120 min

  1. Nails to be sculpted on forms on the left hand. 
  2. No tips permitted. ONLY & EXACT 25 forms only on the nail desk.
  3. Nails can be made using L&P Acrylic or Sculpting Gel systems.
  4. The application and length can be designed to the competitor’s desire and ability.
  5. Artwork can be applied on the surface or encapsulated. If artwork is applied to the surface, it must be no more than 1/4inch (0.65cm) in height.
  6. Gel sealers and topcoat are allowed.
  7. Paint, striper foils, rhinestones and bullion are allowed. Color foils (plain only) can be used for design. Products used can have color or glitter added if desired.
  8. No decals allowed. This means no pre-designed or printed appliqués or decals to be used. 
  9. No stamping of art allowed.
  10. Oil, lanolin, cream, lotion, and polish dry products may be used.
  11. Water and soap may be used for finishing.
  12. E-Files are allowed.
  13. Gel competitors must bring a UV or LED gel lamp.
  14. All designs must be original and not seen in previous competitions or images.
  15. NEW – Pinkie and thumb nails must be pink & white with crisp smile line.
  16. NOTE – Stiletto Nails offers opportunity to demonstrate perfect structure plus showcasing creative art and design skills.
  17. TIP – Any debris or dust under the nails will lose points.
  18. NOTE – A traditional stiletto nail tapers symmetrically and consistently in a straight line from the natural free edge into a sharp point. From the side view, the free edge must extend straight out from the lateral folds to its point. A true stiletto ends in a point.

 FRENCH TWIST / 5 SHAPE CHALLENGE

RIGHT HAND / 120 min

  1. You must sculpt 5 different form & shapes on the RIGHT-hand 2 inches long from cuticle area to the hairline as followed: 
  2. Thumb: Traditional French nail (classic with a transparent nailbed or nailbed extension with cover) with a moon.
  3. Index finger, middle, ring and pinkie: French inlay art design in form of a smile line and over the entire tip/extension of the nail, nailbed and extension can be sculpted in any color.
  4. Hairline no thicker than a business card.
  5. No nail art on top is allowed. Everything must be created or sculpted as an inlay. The surface needs to be even and in a high shine.
  6. Color palette: Allowed are any colors in any sculpting systems (LED/UV Gel, Acrylic or Hybrid Gel). Mixing colors is allowed. 
  7. Competitors are required to sculpt on the model’s RIGHT hand with L&P acrylic, hard gel, or Hybrid Gel on a form. 
  8. One-hand competitors will be given 120-minutes to complete the hand and be positioned in one area together. 
  9. Polish/lacquer is not allowed.
  10. No premixing of any colors before the event. All sculpting products must be in original packaging – with clear correct label.
  11. Cream, lotion, oil, and dry products may be used. Excess lotion and oil will afford point deductions. If a competitor is seen cleaning hands and nails after the competition is closed with any product, such as canned air, it is immediate disqualification. Models may not put fingers in their mouth or rub them on their clothing.
  12. Water and soap may be used in finishing.
  13. Tips are NOT allowed.
  14. For sculpture a roll of ONLY & EXACT 15 forms must be at the table. Pre-tailored forms are NOT allowed. Floor judges will be closely inspecting every form.
  15. No adhesive for the sculpt categories and must not be on the nail desk.
  16. E-Files are allowed.
  17. The competitors must bring their own table lamps. 
  18. Gel competitors must bring a UV or LED gel lamp.
  19. Only for Hard Gel and Hybrid Gel sculpted nails Top Gel and Soak off/Gel polish Top Gel is allowed for the finish. Acrylic needs to be buffed to a high shine.
  20. Only UV/LED hard gels, Acrylic/L&P or Hybrid Gels are allowed.

 REALITY NAIL ART

3 NAIL TIPS / 3 IMAGES / 45 min

  1. This competition is an open, freestyle competition allowing all competitors to work to their strengths.
  2. Competitors will be given 45-minutes to complete 3 nail tips supplied by the competition organizer.
  3. At the start of the competition, competitors will be given a sheet with 3 images. These will represent 3 women (or clothing styles) of different styles and age ranges.
  4. You need to design a nail that is suitable for a commercial salon service that is applied to all 10 nails. NOT a statement nail. The expected timing to apply the design to all 10 nails will be considered, so it will fall within a suitable commercial timing.
  5. No model necessary.
  6. Judges will be looking for commercial salon nail art that would appeal to clients that are depicted in the images i.e., style and age range.
  7. No 3D art is acceptable. Flat art or embellishments with rhinestones etc. only.
  8. Media Paints (non-toxic); Gel Polish; Glitters; Foils; Charms; Rhinestones; Flat stones; Decals; Embellishments; One stroke: Dip System – anything goes – just NO 3D.
  9. The 3 tips must be displayed by sticking them to the paper supplied with tape or tack. Do not offer any explanation or mood board or any extra design to the display. Just 3 tips on the paper provided – adhered next to the images of the 3 women. DO not touch the tips after the comp is complete and the tips are adhered to the paper.
  10. E-Files and LED/UV lamps are allowed.
  11. All work must be created during the competition.
  12. The tech must work alone at the nail desk during the competition.
  13. The organizer will keep hold of all entries for display on the arena and for photographic purposes until the event closes on Sunday or Monday depending on location.
  14. Nail tips are provided by the organizer during the brief.
  15. NEW - Bring a form of adhesive (Patafix adhesive rubber for example) to stick the nails to the brief sheet at the end of the competition for safe judging purposes. 

FOR ALL LIVE COMPETITIONS: You have to bring your own materials (incl. UV/LED lamp, desk light; socket extension & plug adapter).

 INVENT A NAIL SHAPE

1 NAIL / THEME: OPEN / MORE THAN 2 INCHES LONG 

JUGDES want to see a NEW NAIL SHAPE. This is the core reason for this competition. Please note for example – a stiletto nail is not a new nail shape!

  1. No molds to be used, Freehand sculpting only.
  2. This is your chance to show the nail world how creative, imaginative, and skilled you are. Design your own style nail and sculpt it.
  3. This requires just one nail of any length over 2 inches from the cuticle. This is extreme nail shaping sculpture with art expression on top.
  4. Any nail product may be used with crystals/rhinestones/bullion etc. accepted for bling and design purposes. Go wild and create a stunning new shaped nail with design on top, underneath, to the side – wherever.
  5. This offers the opportunity to demonstrate beautiful structure plus showcasing creative art and design skills. The more skills and creativity you show, the better.
  6. No restrictions on shape – anything goes.
  7. Looking for desirable & gorgeous shapes, designs, beauty, style & skills.
  8. ► Enter – Either sculpt your creation on a finger or just stick the nail to a real finger for the photo. NOTE: the cuticle area is also part of the score sheet. One photo taken from above with no light reflection. Then take side right and side left view photo and a 10-second video sweeping across the nail. This means 3 photos plus quick video. (Photo size minimum 2MB / maximum 10MB.) Send everything in to i.voigt@signature-nail.com until 01st of February 2023. ► Pay attention to high-resolution image & video quality. If the work is difficult to recognize, the judges cannot award any points!

 FLAT ART BOX DESIGN

10 NAIL TIPS / THEME: UNIVERSE

  1. All entries must be new to Nailympia and can only be entered one time at this competition. No repeat entries from prior years are allowed. NO entries that have been changed from previous competitions allowed.
  2. Hand painting only – no airbrushing.
  3. The work must not have been published, on social media or entered any competition or published in any journal beforehand.
  4. This competition is an ‘Art painting’ format. Nails to be designed on varying sized nail tips and placed together but not touching. 
  5. Do not stick the 10 nails together to create one large canvas or push them together – there must be an OBVIOUS gap between the tips and there must be at least 5 different sized tips used (5 different lengths). This is art on many tiny canvases. 
  6. Contestants use only artistic painting or one stroke.
  7. Art acrylic paint, watercolor and gel paints are allowed.
  8. No decoration or acrylic product L&P can be used; if this happens, there will be a 10-point deduction. This is flat painted art only.
  9. Any embellishment of actual tips, whether attached to the tip or not, will be considered a violation and 10 points will be deducted.
  10. ► Enter – One photo taken from above with no light reflection of all 10 nails. Then take side right and side left view photo and a 10-second video sweeping across the nails. This means 3 photos plus quick video. (Photo size minimum 2MB / maximum 10MB.)  EXTREME NAIL STYLING POSTER

1 HAND / 5 NAILS / NO FACES / OVER 2 INCHES LENGTH / THEME: OPEN

  1. NOTE – Only 1 photo (image size 3:4) is required. Sent it with a written synopsis of 30 words in English via E-Mail latest on the 1st of FEBRUARY 2023.
  2. All entries must be new to Nailympia and can only be entered one time in this competition. Must be an original photograph that has not been previously published or displayed in public or social media.
  3. It is the whole picture that will be judged, not just the work on nails. Points will be awarded for the nail finish and overall wow factor. The style, background and theme of the picture will also be judged. 
  4. Think nail magazine cover when creating this poster.
  5. Finishing on nails can be in any media. It´s a chance to go wild with nails & imagination but keep a style.
  6. Image must be in color. 
  7. ► Enter – One image (image size 3:4) with no light reflection of one hand. (Photo size minimum 2MB / maximum 10MB.) A written synopsis of no more than 30 words in English must be provided with your photograph detailing how the look was achieved. This is for the judges to mark complexity and understand the journey to complete the look. Send everything in to i.voigt@signature-nail.com until 01st of February 2023► Pay attention to high-resolution image & video quality. If the work is difficult to recognize, the judges cannot award any points!
  8. Winner will be announced via social media, the website and/or email within 2 weeks after Nailympia Germany.
  9. NOTE - Points will be deduced for failing to include the text. 

 RUNWAY NAILS

3 FULL COVER NAIL TIPS / THEME: VIKING

  1. Decorate 3 press-on full cover nail tips / Theme Viking.
  2. Competitors must design 3 different nail designs they feel will enhance, accessories & interpret this theme.
  3. The 3 tips must be displayed in a simple way with a short explanation or visual sketch of how the designs fit the theme on a mood board.
  4. The mood board must be flat with no edges (not a box/not 3D) and must not exceed the size of A4 (8x12”). Foam board or cardboard are recommended to keep the board sturdy. Nails must be adhered to this board.
  5. Competitors may use ANY suitable materials that do not necessarily have to be nail products or can be a mixture of nail products and other materials. There are no restrictions on the creation of these 3 nails.
  6. The designs must be reasonably easy and quick to reproduce (100s would need to be made for a fashion show).
  7. Note that the main focus of a fashion show is the designer’s collection. Nails can be a ‘statement’ accessory but should not overshadow the complete look.
  8. Nails at a fashion show are photographed close up for detailed beauty shots.
  9. The finished nail designs should include suitable shape and length.
  10. ► Enter - Place three tips on the mood board and photograph. Then photograph each nail tip individually. This equals 4 photos (size of photos minimum 2MB – maximum 10MB). Record a 10-second video sweeping across the nail tips. Send everything in to i.voigt@signature-nail.com until 01st of February 2023► Pay attention to high-resolution image & video quality. If the work is difficult to recognize, the judges cannot award any points!
  11. Winner will be announced via social media, the website and/or email within 2 weeks after Nailympia Germany.

 MIX MEDIA BOX

10 NAIL TIPS / THEME: OPEN

  1. All entries must be new to Nailympia and can only be entered one time. No repeat entries from prior years allowed. 
  2. All work must be ORIGINAL and not added to after a previous comp, copied from a masterclass or another tech’s work. Completely original.
  3. No molds to be used in this comp.
  4. It must not have been seen in any competition in the world – whatever size.
  5. The work must not have been published, on social media or entered any competition beforehand. A maximum of ONE entry per competitor is allowed. 
  6. This competition is a ‘show & tell’ format. Nails to be designed on varying sized nail tips and placed together. 
  7. DO NOT stick the 10 nails together to create one large canvas – there must be a clearly visible gap between the tips and there must be at least 5 different sized tips used. This is art on many tiny canvases.
  8. Art on the nails must not exceed 1/4 inch in height from the surface of the nail. Don't put the tips in a box. This way the tips can be photographed better. 
  9. All entries must be accompanied by a description (50 words MAXIMUM in English) of the work involved including types of nail art media and techniques used. Points will be deducted if no description is provided.
  10. For continuity, please describe the theme that is featured.
  11. Competitors must use 3 of these 5 nail art media: airbrushing, embellishments (rhinestones, striping tape etc), L&P acrylic, gel, hand painting, one stroke. Failure to use 3 will result in a 10-point deduction for each media less than 3.
  12. No decals allowed. No stamping art allowed. All media used must be used in an artistic way. It is the competitor’s responsibility to clarify anything questionable prior to the event and the judges’ decisions are accepted as final.
  13. No embellishment or product may extend further than 1⁄4″ from the original nail surface in any direction, if it does, there will be a 10-point deduction.
  14. Please do not choose themes in copyright- NO Disney, Pixar – no movies, no characters etc.
  15. ► Enter – One photo taken from above with no light reflection of all 10 nails. Then take side right and side left view photo with 10-second video sweeping across the nail tips. This means 3 photos plus quick video. (Photo size minimum 2MB / maximum 10MB.)
